Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is a critical time for beneficiaries to evaluate and change their coverage. But what if you missed the December 7th deadline—or made a decision you now regret? Thankfully, Medicare offers a second chance to make adjustments during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which runs from January 1st to March 31st.
How the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period Works
This three-month period is designed for individuals enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans who need to correct mistakes made during AEP. During OEP, you can:
- Switch Back to Your Previous Medicare Advantage Plan: If you’re unhappy with your new plan, you can return to the coverage you had before.
- Choose a New Medicare Advantage Plan: If you’re looking for different benefits or a better fit, you can switch to a different Advantage plan.
- Drop Medicare Advantage and Return to Original Medicare: If you decide to leave Medicare Advantage altogether, you can switch to Original Medicare and sign up for a standalone Part D prescription drug plan.
What’s Not Allowed During OEP
While OEP provides valuable flexibility, it has some important limitations:
- You cannot enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan if you aren’t already enrolled in one.
- If you enrolled in a standalone Part D prescription plan during AEP, you cannot switch back to a Medicare Advantage plan during OEP.
Why Act Now?
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is not an extension of AEP; it serves as a separate window for making limited changes to Medicare Advantage plans. Waiting too long could leave you stuck with a plan that doesn’t meet your needs until the next AEP in fall of 2025.
If you feel uncertain of whether your selected Advantage plan will best meet your needs in the coming year, now is the time to investigate your options. We’re available to answer your questions, so give us a call! You’ll feel prepared for Medicare Advantage OEP when it begins in January, and you can make an informed decision then.
